Photokinetic examination of (Z,E,E)-4,4′-distyrylazobenzene

1995

Abstract 4,4′-Distyrylazobenzenes demonstrate a photokinetic equilibrium and a superimposed thermal backward reaction in which the absorption coefficient of one of the partners in the equilibrium is principally unknown. Using the dependence of the photostationary state on the irradiation intensity, the photochemical quantum yields ϕ 1 A and ϕ 2 B were determined, as well as the thermal rate constant k , as a function of the irradiation and observation wavelengths. Experimental difficulties and the wavelength dependence of ϕ 1 A and ϕ 2 B are discussed.

The hairpin extension controls solvent access to the chromophore binding pocket in a bacterial phytochrome: a UV-vis absorption spectroscopy study.

2021

AbstractSolvent access to the protein interior plays an important role in the function of many proteins. Phytochromes contain a specific structural feature, a hairpin extension that appears to relay structural information from the chromophore to the rest of the protein. The extension interacts with amino acids near the chromophore, and hence shields the chromophore from the surrounding solvent. We envision that the detachment of the extension from the protein surface allows solvent exchange reactions in the vicinity of the chromophore. This can facilitate for example, proton transfer processes between solvent and the protein interior. To test this hypothesis, the kinetics of the protonation…

Photochemistry of 3,6-bis(styryl)pyridazines in solution and in neat liquid crystalline phase—optical switching and imaging techniques

2008

Abstract 3,6-Bis(styryl)pyridazines 1a – f with 2–6 alkoxy groups show on irradiation in solution a stereoisomerization which leads to a photostationary state of ( E , E )- and ( E , Z )-isomer. Sensitizing and quenching experiments reveal that the ( E , E )→( E , Z ) route is a pure triplet process, whereas the ( E , Z )→( E , E ) route can have a minor singlet by-reaction. Hexyloxy or dodecyloxy chains on the terminal benzene rings convey the ( E , E )-isomers of compounds 1a , b , d – f thermotropic liquid crystalline properties. In particular S A , S C , and S F/I phases were studied with regard to their photochemical behavior. Depending on the system, photodegradation of the smectic ph…

Abstract. Atmospheric concentrations of nitrous acid (HONO), one of the major precursors of the hydroxyl radical (OH) in the troposphere, significantly exceed the values predicted by the assumption of a photostationary state (PSS) during daytime. Therefore, additional sources of HONO were intensively investigated in the last decades. This study presents budget calculations of HONO based on simultaneous measurements of all relevant species, including HONO and OH at two different measurement heights, i.e. 1 m above the ground and about 2 to 3 m above the canopy (24 m above the ground), conducted in a boreal forest environment. We observed mean HONO concentrations of about 6.5 × 108 molecules …

Wavelength-Gated Adaptation of Hydrogel Properties via Photo-Dynamic Multivalency in Associative Star Polymers.

2020

Abstract Responsive materials, such as switchable hydrogels, have been largely engineered for maximum changes between two states. In contrast, adaptive systems target distinct functional plateaus between these maxima. Here, we demonstrate how the photostationary state (PSS) of an E/Z‐arylazopyrazole photoswitch can be tuned by the incident wavelength across a wide color spectrum, and how this behavior can be exploited to engineer the photo‐dynamic mechanical properties of hydrogels based on multivalent photoswitchable interactions. We show that these hydrogels adapt to the wavelength‐dependent PSS and the number of arylazopyrazole units by programmable relationships. Hence, our material des…
